Our Wines

As with winery owners and winemakers, individual wines come in a wide range of styles to accommodate different tastes. For example some wines are "big", containing high tannins which some people prefer. Other wines are produced to be "lighter", either dry or sweet, again to meet different tastes. Some people enjoy heavily oaked wines while others don't and so on.

Dereck, Diane & MikeWith all those possibilities in mind, we are fortunate to have Derek Irwin, Winemaker and U.C. Davis graduate, join Naggiar Vineyards as our in house consultant winemaker. Derek comes to us with a wealth of knowledge and successful experience as winemaker and consultant to wineries across California and several oversees markets.

With Derek's help, owning and operating Naggiar Vineyards will allow us, over time, to produce most styles of wines that our customers might want. However we have decided to adhere to certain guidelines in crafting our wines to produce the best possible wines from our vineyards.

First, we focus on making wines that are handcrafted in small lots from the best grapes from our vineyards. Next we strive to make wines that are exciting and delicious; wines that will exceed the expectations of our customers.

Our wines are crafted to have fruit forward flavors with great color, aromas, taste and a long lingering finish. Even though some wines might be "big," tannins should be soft and never harsh; never too acidic, "hot" or heavy with oak. In other words, delicious well balanced wines that reflect the varietal characteristics of the grapes from which they were made.

DEREK IRWIN DEREK IRWIN

After graduating from U.C. DAVIS, Derek started his career as enologist and assistant winemaker at Cosentino Winery in Yountville, CA. He later joined Bouchain Vineyards in Napa as assistant wine maker for cellar

In 1998 he moved to Viansa Winery in Sonoma, CA. where he subsequently rose to overall Winemaker and Vineyard Manager. In that capacity he was responsible for creating new directions for Viansa wines and for the management of all winemaking and vineyard operations for the winery.

Derek is currently an independent consultant, principle and managing partner at Madura USA with customers in Napa, Sonoma, the Sierra Foothills as well as South America, Spain and Italy.
